Prop 36 Funding Cuts

I think it is so terrible that addicts and alcoholics are receiving yet another blow by the 90 million dollar cut in Prop 36 funding. These cuts are so devastating that the survival of some of our programs that are already underfunded will be forced to shut down some or all of their services. We need to send the message that this is not acceptable to the recovering community. What should we do about this? Who else is mad about this?

  1. I'm really mad about this, too! After eight hugely successful years (250,000+ people diverted to treatment and $2 billion saved), Sacramento has turned its back on the largest and most successful treatment-instead-of-incarceration program in the US - and probably the world.

It's important for people to know that the law is still on the books - so Prop. 36-eligible defendants remain protected from incarceration. Inability to pay for your own treatment is not a lawful reason to be excluded from the program.

Drug Policy Alliance encourages defendants to stand up for their rights and demand that they not be sent to jail or prison simply because Sacramento would rather pay $49,000 a year to put them in prison, than a tenth of that on treatment!

Also, there's an important role for the recovery community here! Please work with your local agencies to innovate and develop alternatives to bringing people into the criminal justice system. For example, maybe you can develop a model based on San Diego's Serial Inebriate Program (SIP).
