The budget proposal would raise $4.9 billion in taxes and other revenues, including $210 million from alcohol taxes. While this increase would add less than 2 cents to the cost of a beer, it would go a long way toward preserving critical services and programs. The last time the state increased its tax on alcohol was in 1991.

Action needs to be taken by June 15, 2010

California Proposes Raising Alcohol TaxesSupport 4 Recovery, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11504095408272023672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799799937252254472.post-82552824522176485922010-06-11T22:06:00.000-07:002010-06-11T22:17:10.059-07:00Recovery Walk Planning Meeting

Please join us at the next Recovery Walk planning meeting on Friday, July 9th from 6pm to 7:30pm. The chicken wanted change!

JOHN MC CAIN: My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he
recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the
chickens on the other side of the road.

HILLARY CLINTON: When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure right from Day One that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn’t about me.

GEORGE W. BUSH: We don’t really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here.

DICK CHENEY: Where’s my gun?

JOE BIDEN: I’m tired of walking on egg shells because of this chicken.

COLIN POWELL: Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road.

BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with that chicken. What is your
definition of chicken?

AL GORE: I invented the chicken.

JOHN KERRY: Although I voted to let the chicken cross the road, I am now against it! It was the wrong road to cross, and I was misled about the chicken’s intentions. I am not for it now, and will remain against it.

AL SHARPTON: Why are all the chickens white? We need some black chickens.

DR. PHIL: The problem we have here is that this chicken won’t realize that he must first deal with the problem on this side of the road before it goes after the problem on the other side of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he is acting by not taking on his current problems before adding new problems.

OPRAH: Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I’m going to give this chicken a car so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN: We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet been allowed to have access to the other side of the road.

NANCY GRACE: That chicken crossed the road because he’s guilty! You can see it in his eyes and the way he walks.

PAT BUCHANAN: To steal the job of a decent, hardworking American.

MARTHA STEWART: No one called me to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the Farmer’s Market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any
insider information.

DR SEUSS: Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Did he cross it with a hare? Did he cross it with a bear? Did he check if the road was hot? I kinda doubt it, I think not! Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed, I’ve not been told. Just one more thing I have to say, it’s been bugging me to this very day. If the Chicken is a she, why do we keep saying HE?

ERNEST HEMINGWAY: To die in the rain, alone.

GRANDPA: In my day we didn’t ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough.

BARBARA WALTERS: Isn’t that interesting? In a few moments, we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heart warming story of how it experienced a serious case of molting, and went on to accomplish its lifelong dream of crossing the road.

ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

JOHN LENNON: Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads together, in peace.

ALBERT EINSTEIN: Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken?

COLONEL SANDERS: Did I miss one?Support 4 Recovery, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11504095408272023672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799799937252254472.post-74285136138170314202010-06-10T09:06:00.000-07:002010-06-10T10:16:06.542-07:00How Do You Find Balance?<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxZFqH7Y3gd4tUFcAgTfHN0d5hkfnGaM4F08CSF_43eNJnUURISyejQxz9HMzzx7IuUaTNN04itm0ud0hevi1hYRk0SkkMRYd6PDjWqnADp0Nm0WJeZ1m2q4QRBcKV-9ArsI1jdmqbRsxP/s320/balance_three_rocks.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481177449698951682" />

The Five Freedoms
By Virginia Satir

1. It’s about meditating in spite of having five dogs. Yes, I’m batty enough to have five dogs. Why do you think I try to meditate?

I’m doing all the right things…comfortable clothing, focus on my breath, everything is quiet, I’m sitting crossed legged on my meditation stool and just starting to relax and focus. Then, this cold wet nose nudged my hand. I open my eyes and there’s my Fox Terrier who looks like a Beagle sitting in front of me wanting attention. I can’t help but smile and rub her face, something she loves. She leaves. She got what she wanted and now I’m left with getting back to trying to focus on my breath.

Ten minutes later, something gets my Jack Russell’s attention and I hear this muffled, “Boof, boof.” Before long, all hell breaks loose and…well, have you ever had five dogs in your house barking all at the same time before they race out into the yard at some imaginary something?

I try to remember what my Yoga teacher taught me. Meditation can be done in spite of distractions, like having an itch, or a wandering thought. He never mentioned five dogs barking at the same time.

I can’t help but smile. Even ten minutes of quieting my mind has helped me be calm before I go and round up all five mutts so my neighbors, and I, don’t go crazy. Normally, I would scream at them from the front door to shut up. I'm not really sure what drives my neighbors nuts. Me screaming or the dogs barking. Maybe I should tell my neighbors about meditation?...Support 4 Recovery, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11504095408272023672noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799799937252254472.post-37035782844644167712010-05-02T19:08:00.000-07:002010-06-09T12:29:53.427-07:00The Power of Pasta...and People!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOuT5A7H1RwH6xQYO78vC8uhQrtsBSWY0sh03mExofAzzMpAWC2tcHQjWImfrdY_tadmqI8kSOGnNIxnwtNtKZtVm5YYjsVeqiiLn3IokLA0ajY9ybjru0AaKNbcRp2IuNg4oc9xF3VyBd/s320/power_of_pasta24x6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467233461003779218" />
What happened in the early evening of May 1st, 2010 was, just a few years ago, an idea. It was an idea that came to fruition through the talent, spirit and plain hard work of a group of individuals committed to helping people in recovery. And, it succeeded...greatly.

Here's what the Oz Alumnae said - "On behalf of the Oz Alumnae, I would like to thank you for "The Power of Pasta". What a wonderful gathering! We were all energized (it wasn't from the sugar in the delicious cake) as we walked out of the hall this evening. We even had a mini alumnae meeting in the parking lot brainstorming on what we can do to make our alumnae stronger. :)

Thank you and the volunteers for all your hard work. It's inspiring!!! We look forward to future events ~ the Recovery Walk and the Board of Supervisors Proclamation.

Thank you for including us in the function and thanks to you all again!

Gratefully,

The Oz Alumnae ~ Kelly, Olivia, Val, Diana, Robyn, Rosalie and Cheryl."

Over 80 showed up for The Power of Pasta. It was an occasion meant to bring people together to share ideas on how we could better serve ourselves and the communities we live in. It did more than that. It was the start of building a bond that will only strengthen as more people in recovery and their partners get involved. The Treatment Centers who attended are: Frederic Ozanam Center, New Connections, Wollom, Cole House, Fresh Start Alumni Association, Recovery Management Services, Ujima, Discovery House, Diablo Valley Ranch Alumni Association along with organization, Opportunity Junction, who fights poverty by helping low-income adults gain the skills and confidence to support themselves and their families.

We'd like to thank the following businesses for providing the food: Berkeley Bowl, Tullios, The Old Spaghetti Factory, Safeway, Cakes By Laurel, Trader Joes and ROCCO's.

Rick Baez, the Program Director for the Peer to Peer Treatment Program at San Quentin Prison, spoke about the dedication of the men who are still incarcerated helping other prisoners who need drug treatment while in prison. S4R is directly involved with helping these counselors continue this program.

John West ran a mean raffle which raised over $300. Thank you JDub! He couldn't have done it without the hard work of Margaret Lennon who got some excellent prizes donated. But many of us have enjoyed the happiest hoildays of our lives sober--an idea we would never dream of, wanted, or believed possible when drinking. Here are some tips for having and all around ball without a drop of alcohol.

1. Line up extra recovery activities for the hoilday season. Arrange to take newcomers to meetings, answer the phones at a clubhouse or central office, speak, help with the dishes, or visit the alcoholic ward at a hospital.

2. Be host to recovery friends, especially newcomers. If you don't have a place where you can throw a formal party, take one person to a diner and spring for coffee.

3. Keep your recovery telephone list with you at all times. If a drinking urge or panic comes--postpone everything else until you've called another person in recovery.

4. Find out about the special holiday parties, meetings, or other celebrations given by groups in your area, and go. If you're timid, take someone newer than you are.

5. Skip all drinking occasions you are nervous about. Remember how clever you were at excuses when drinking? Now put the talent to good use. No office party is as important as saving your life.

6. If you have to go to a drinking party and can't take a recovery friend with you, keep some candy handy. Also, take your cell phone with you and a phone list. Call people.

7. Don't think you have to stay late. Plan in advance an" important date" you have to keep.

8. Go to church. Any church. You don't have to be religious. Make it your own meditation time.

9. Don't sit around brooding. Catch up on those books, museums, walks, and letters.

10. Don't start now getting worked up about all those holiday temptations, Remember-"One Day At A Time".

11. Enjoy the true beauty of holiday love and joy. Maybe you cannot give material gifts -- But this year, you can give love.

12. Having had a ..." No need to spell out the Twelfth Step here, since you already know it.

What are some of the things you can share that you do to take care of yourself during the holiday season?Support 4 Recovery, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11504095408272023672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799799937252254472.post-78208949798052137212009-10-30T11:08:00.001-07:002009-10-30T11:08:31.663-07:00The History Of Halloween Plus 5 Things You Didn't Know About The Holiday! The History Of Halloween Plus 5 Things You Didn't Know About The Holiday!

Posted using ShareThisSupport 4 Recovery, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11504095408272023672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799799937252254472.post-86731847282860598902009-10-26T15:50:00.000-07:002009-10-26T15:56:46.855-07:00Lois Wilson<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 251px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUOBPczQTazfRaruJmcm37gJ5wxNKSCywKZ9MNkqcPk-JptCQrXr3bk9o-3oMHMwO-6F5jqu-xmj9WWftZ8e1mO7d5u6RqyUpT6uj4s3QMlZviHm9lLCFqdh7fOizkScrpdwCMezb_1jDF/s320/lois_wilson.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397045288429253602" />
Lois Wilson (March 4, 1891 - October 5, 1988) was the founder of Al-Anon, a support group for the friends and family of alcoholics. She was the wife of Alcoholics Anonymous founder Bill Wilson. Lois was born into affluence in Brooklyn Heights with her father being a prominent surgeon and gynecologist. Abraham Lincoln's grandchildren were playmates of her siblings when they were young and they attended prestigious schools. Lois began to work on efforts for families of alcoholics after Bill had gone through rehab and founded A.A. These efforts led to the founding of Al-Anon.

After Bill died in 1971 of emphysema, Lois inherited 90% of her late husband's estate and copyright royalties from The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. Reiki is the name given to a simple yet profound system of natural healing for body and mind, which was developed by Dr. Mikao Usui who lived in Japan during the nineteenth century. Rei means "universal", and ki, or chi, in Chinese, means "Life Force Energy." Some comments that CAADE
has received in the past several weeks addressed provisions that
were in a previous version of the bill. They have a summary of the bill’s
provisions and a link to the actual bill on the ADP website. We
encourage everyone to visit the ADP website for updates and let us
know what you think. We will pass this info on to CAADE.

SB 707 is currently in the Senate Appropriations Committee. Senator
DeSaulnier and ADP plan is to move the bill in January. In
preparation for January, ADP is meeting with stakeholders who have
expressed an interest in the bill to hear their concerns and likes,
and to get their recommendations for strengthening the measure.

CAADE will be hosting meetings at ADP, at 1700 K Street in
Sacramento, and via conference call to discuss specific provisions of
the bill such as, but not limited to, the different tiers that will
allow for professional growth and a career path, criminal background
checks and wash out periods, and education requirements. The goal of
the topical meetings is to come up with solutions and participants
should submit their proposed amendments to ADP prior to the relevant
meeting(s). The following sessions will allow participants to hear
the broad array of perspectives on the issues and help them to
understand the various points of view and impact that proposed
amendments would have on the AOD service and provider system.

• Criminal Background Checks on Monday, October 26 from 1:30 to 3:30pm.
• Counselor Testing on Wednesday, November 17 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
• Counselor Education and Experience Requirements on Monday, November
30 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
• AOD Counselor Scope of Practice on Monday, December 7 from 1:30 to
3:30 p.m.

Also, The Assembly Select Committee on Alcohol and Drug Abuse will be
holding an informational hearing in the Capitol on November 16. The
topic of the hearing will be counselor certification and licensing and
SB 707. Senator DeSaulnier and ADP Director Zito will be on the
agenda and there will be opportunity for public comment.Support 4 Recovery, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11504095408272023672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799799937252254472.post-10101360962112573892009-10-25T13:03:00.000-07:002009-10-25T14:17:43.917-07:00Advisory Council Meeting<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 225px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1L8l2Fd-FMQg0SRl7be3FWv6p_hboxNR5o4JeHYrOGlFbeBU1FF2P_dxEhXizfwdFvakrkDh9-v_f181PsxtvAu5JXbYEbnM2u0AZFSKfbOgnKGUEDgJOKh7XVmde8RYtfq9NIw5Zp0Pz/s400/AC_102309_future_sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396644349250383010" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlypxQCtQEnTwVWJrWbgWkRzXsynStFAPVndw6mXC1-6eWxlhOWzHp0st4YNtdsfzq8HeSuIHWIy5Z1DiZaMviIjhz4PVoiqLJxxJYdTzK_TanaxQZl2jhLBiwsV9ebE7gAjpEXeJir0GF/s400/AC_102309_sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396643478929338626" /> S4R Board member Amy A. gave a presentation to the S4R Advisory Council about applying for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). So many great ideas were born from this discussion! There are quite a few eligible activities. One that was talked about was prison re-entry services. As we all know, inmates (both men and women) usually have a very difficult time when they get out of prison with very few services available to them. S4R can help make a difference. Come and join us. Let us know your ideas! The next Advisory Council meeting is Friday, November 20th at 5:00pm. We now have a Volunteer meeting for those who would like to be involved with our future events. That meeting will follow the Advisory Council meeting on November 20th. It will be at 6:00pm. Special thanks goes to Commissioner Diane Vavrek for having the courage to start the discussion which moved the commission towards a vote. She addressed the issue in a respectable manner to all involved including the recovering community. The City of Pleasant Hill should be proud to have such a compassionate woman serving the community. I am sure that their decision will more than likely be appealed to the City Council and Support4Recovery will organize as part our mission statement which says "breaking down the stigma and disrimination by creating a unified voice for positive change." I know that you will help us move our mission forward as we help get this program opened. More to come.S4RTomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01913832510689666616noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799799937252254472.post-11035886830192538262009-10-13T11:17:00.001-07:002009-10-13T17:34:51.869-07:00Marty Mann<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 260px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBBzaEZSdrnXq9BNhzUA25GNEvFu5dTVh8rHdMI04zXxL5OaD92y_6iiJg_U5klYsMfBFXpoRFXZrbWqUWe0hcMdkUuJKc-U62UoeSQdQ6mwCMqBTv4smChEF2YNubpPwdyUkqzehorraS/s320/marty_mann1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392247334247048002" />
She would be the first to claim that her sobriety, found through Alcoholics Anonymous in its very earliest days, was the most important factor in her success. Indeed, she was the first woman to stay sober in AA -- from 1940 until her death in 1980. Her vision was to educate the whole country about alcoholism. She was obsessed with eliminating the historic stigma attached to chronic inebriation. She joined forces with the Yale School of Alcohol Studies (now at Rutgers), where early significant scientific research into alcoholism was underway. Eventually her nationwide educational efforts led to the creation of a separate organization, the National Council on Alcoholism (now the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence or NCADD). NCADD has been this country's most important educational, referral resource for alcoholics, their families and communities all across the country.

Three ideas formed the basis of her message:

1. Alcoholism is a disease and the alcoholic a sick person.
2. The alcoholic can be helped and is worth helping.
3. Alcoholism is a public health problem and therefore a public responsibility.Support 4 Recovery, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11504095408272023672noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799799937252254472.post-59960097785126221402009-10-13T09:51:00.001-07:002009-10-13T09:57:07.056-07:00Governor Signs Historic Prison Reform AgreementGovernor Signs Historic Prison Reform Agreement

Posted using ShareThis

Now what??Support 4 Recovery, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/11504095408272023672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799799937252254472.post-27481721071116232682009-10-13T09:44:00.000-07:002009-10-25T14:40:58.041-07:00Tonight's Planning Commision Gathering Postponed<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 262px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC4UvITjn2YLIgAw-7-8YncN3H-E66yrZz_n30NATc9Uhl24pKCO-yPqWol3Ivewt7m_07J4kIZE-Y_h6nwFatjTDB8uhdHRaZQdq2EeF9gzi7tV3THh5uF0NO_xw5JLml1zuZuuS4DJ17/s320/justice.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392126550193555042" />The gathering for the Planning Commission meeting has been postponed. The NIMBY people are appealing the Commission's ruling in favor of Dr. Jordan so this issue is going to go before the City Council. That's when everyone can show up in support of St. Teresa's Retreat. Please pass this on.
